Product details

The Solis S6 5kW Plus (S6-EH1P5K-L-PLUS) is a single-phase hybrid inverter for 48 V batteries and the first size in the S6 Plus range that opens up arrays of up to 10 kWp. It powers the home from the panels first, stores the surplus in the battery, and switches the backup circuit to battery power in under 10 ms when the grid goes down.

Its rated output is 5 kW, 21.8 A at 230 V, which is above the 16 A that G98 allows, so the network operator has to approve a G99 application before it is fitted. It uses up to 8 kW of PV at once and moves up to 5 kW and 112 A in or out of the battery.

What's in the box

From the packing list in Solis's S6-EH1P(3-8)K-L-PLUS manual (v1.2, October 2025), which covers the 5 kW; the parts the installer supplies are listed after it.

  • The 5 kW inverter, the back plate it mounts on, and two screws to lock it in place
  • Four expansion bolts for the wall
  • Two pairs of MC4 DC connectors, one pair per string
  • The ESCT-TA16-100A/50mA CT on a 5 m lead, compulsory for hybrid use, to measure what flows at the grid connection
  • A Wi-Fi/LAN stick that links the inverter to SolisCloud
  • A parallel communication cable with four RJ45 connectors
  • A quick installation manual
  • The battery leads: 2 AWG (about 35 mm²) on R38-8 ring terminals, per Solis, with a 300 A DC breaker recommended
  • A meter: the SDM120CTM is optional, used instead of the CT and bought separately
  • PV cable, AC cables for the grid and backup circuits, and the AC isolator

Earlier units, built in 2024, shipped with a Wi-Fi/GPRS stick rather than the Wi-Fi/LAN version.

Panels and strings

There are two trackers, one string on each, rated 16 A operating and 20 A short-circuit per input. Tracking runs from 90 V to 435 V with start-up at 90 V, and the inputs must never see more than 500 V, which a long string of modern panels can exceed on a frosty morning: check the cold open-circuit voltage before settling the string length.

Keep the two PV numbers separate. 10 kWp is Solis's recommended maximum array, twice the 5 kW rating. 8 kW is the most PV power the 5 kW will take in at any moment, 160% of its rating, and the rest is clipped. Because each input stops at 16 A, a string must work at 250 V or more to deliver that full 8 kW. An east/west layout, one roof face per tracker, gives a flatter output curve that loses little to the cap.

The battery side

Any 40–60 V lithium or lead-acid battery can be used, with BMS communication over CAN or RS485. The 5 kW charges and discharges at up to 5 kW and 112 A, which is more than one IntelliHome 5 kWh's 100 A rating, so with a single 5 kWh the battery sets the limit. The IntelliHome 10 kWh (200 A) or 16 kWh (157 A), or two 5 kWh units in parallel, cover the full 112 A.

Inverters built before April 2026 need Solis's firmware update before they are commissioned with an IntelliHome battery. There is also a "No battery" mode, so the 5 kW can run as a grid-tied inverter until a battery is added.

Backup, generator and off-grid

The backup port supplies the full 5 kW continuously, and up to 10 kW for 10 seconds to start motors and compressors. When the grid is up, up to 40 A passes through to the backup loads; in a power cut they share the inverter's 5 kW.

There is a GEN port for a generator, with automatic on/off control, and the inverter can run off-grid from solar alone. Existing grid-tied solar can be AC-coupled for export control and off-grid operation, and up to six of these inverters can run in parallel, including three-phase arrangements of three or more.

Grid approval

G99: approval before installation

The 5 kW's 21.8 A is over G98's 16 A per phase, so the installer applies to the network operator under G99 and waits for approval before fitting it. Where staying on G98 matters more than the extra output, the 3.6 kW is the largest model in this range that does.

Built in

  • Integrated PV switch with ground-fault and residual-current monitoring and anti-islanding protection
  • 7-inch screen plus Bluetooth for app-based setup; SolisCloud over Wi-Fi/LAN via the stick, 4G optional
  • Natural convection cooling, with no fan
  • AFCI arc-fault protection is optional, not standard

On the wall

At 23 kg and 335 × 560 × 253 mm, the 5 kW is the same size and weight as the 3 and 3.6 kW. It is IP66, so it can go outdoors, rated −25 °C to +60 °C, but Solis says to keep it out of direct sun and out of living areas where people or animals stay for long periods.

Mount it vertically (within 5°), with 300 mm clear above, 150 mm on each side and 500 mm in front. Allow 800 mm between its base and the floor, reduced to 500 mm when no battery cabinet or other heat source sits beneath. Do not stack one inverter directly above another.

Alternative sizes

Other single-phase S6 Plus sizes, with the same case, battery range and app as this one. The 3 kW and 3.6 kW stay on G98 and skip the G99 wait; the 6, 8 and 10 kW need G99 too.

Questions on the 5 kW

Why does the 5 kW need G99?

Its 21.8 A output is above the 16 A per phase that G98 covers, so the network operator must approve it first. The 3.6 kW is the biggest model here that avoids the application.

Will one 5 kWh battery do?

It works, but the IntelliHome 5 kWh is rated 100 A, a little under the 5 kW's 112 A, so battery power tops out slightly lower. A 10 kWh, or two 5 kWh units in parallel, removes that limit.

Is monitoring included?

Yes: a Wi-Fi/LAN stick for SolisCloud comes in the box, and the inverter has Bluetooth for setup.

Do I need to buy a CT or meter?

The CT is supplied and is all Solis needs for hybrid operation. The SDM120CTM meter is only an optional alternative.

Is a longer warranty available?

Yes. The standard five years can be extended to 10 or 20; give the inverter's serial number in the order notes, and the certificate follows from Solis in roughly 6 to 8 weeks.

Who should install it?

A qualified electrician, since it joins the grid, the battery and the consumer unit and so comes under BS 7671. Solis's manual asks for the battery to be off and checked at 0 V before its cables are handled.
